“Everyone who plays blackjack tries to get as close to 21 as possible. However, after a while, you comes to realise you need to take a different approach.”
How to play blackjack
Everyone who plays blackjack for the first time tries to do the same thing - get as close to 21 as possible without going over. However, anyone who's played for a little while comes to realise that they need to take a different approach.
It's a common misconception that what we've written above is the aim of blackjack. Casinos don't exactly discourage this perception, because it helps them bring in more money. Your real mission when you're sitting at a casino blackjack table is to beat the dealer. You can do this by:
- Getting a blackjack - if your first two cards are an ace and a card worth 10, and the dealer doesn't also have a blackjack, you have the best possible hand and win.
- Get a higher hand than the dealer - provided you don't go over 21, this is another way to beat the dealer.
- Make the dealer go bust - this largely depends on the cards you're dealt, but a hand that pushes the dealer to keep hitting increases the likelihood that they'll go bust.
In the game of blackjack, casino or online, European Blackjack Gold or regular, a player has several choices when it comes to their turn. They can choose to hit (draw another card to improve the value of their hand), double (receive only more card and double their bet, a good way to win some real cash) or, if they have a pair of matching cards, split their hand. In this case, players double their bet and play a new hand with each individual card. Once a player is satisfied with their hand, they stand.
Tips for playing blackjack online
While techniques like card counting might help you wring out a few extra ZAR from the casino, blackjack advantage play isn't quite so easy online. Online casinos tend to reshuffle their decks after every hand, so you'll have to find some new ways to get strategic.
While your own cards will inevitably influence your actions, they should also be influenced by the dealer's visible card - if the dealer has a visible 10, for example, you don't want to be too conservative when it comes to making your hand the best it can be.
It's up to you whether or not you choose to take insurance if the dealer's up card is an ace, but many top gambling experts recommend against it because the dealer is likely to have blackjack less than 33% of the time.
